Why Work At Cathcart Technology?

There are many reasons why people choose a career in recruitment. For some, it’s the fast-paced nature of filling a vacancy in record time. For others, it’s the feeling you get when you find someone their dream role.

At Cathcart Technology, we’re more than just recruiters – we’re specialists. That’s not just in technology recruitment, but in facilitating culture-adds where people feel welcome and valued – with the knowledge that the work they’re doing makes a difference.

Of course, this approach to recruitment starts at home. So, we sat down with our consultants to discover what drives them forward, and how they’ve developed since joining the Cathcart team…

Nathan Hill, Recruitment Consultant – Scotland

Why did you decide to join Cathcart Technology?

The decision to join Cathcart was an easy one for me as, throughout the onboarding process, they really showed me just how much the people that work here matter to them.

They made it clear that they wanted me to do the right thing for not just myself, but my family too – outlining all the support I’d be given at the start of my journey and throughout my career here.

What does a typical day at Cathcart look like for you?

I’ve only been at Cathcart for a couple of months so far, so things will definitely be different in the future – but I suppose what I like most about this role right now is that every day can be completely different to the last.

Recently, I’ve been focussing more on the resourcing side of things – finding the right people for particular roles, and having conversations with them about past positions, their skill set, and where they see themselves in the future.

What’s your favourite thing about working at Cathcart?

So far, it has to be the people! The support that I’ve been given from day one has been incredible, and Cathcart has stayed true to their word. I’ve been given the freedom to work at my own pace, and always having the team there to support me has been amazing.

What would you say to someone thinking of joining Cathcart?

Two words: do it! You won’t regret it. The culture and support you get here is extremely hard to find in other companies. Plus, there’s the potential to make much more money than I ever have before. I genuinely wish I’d made this move a lot sooner in my career – don’t hesitate!

What does a typical day at Cathcart look like for you?

Very tough question! It can be varied. In fact, it changes quite frequently.

Most days are spent scouring LinkedIn and sending out well-targeted messages. I’ll also speak to Glasgow-based devs about their current roles and what they find genuinely interesting, with a view to pairing them with well-suited opportunities.

I’m not going to lie, a few chats can run over a lot! I can get distracted chatting about food, restaurants, football (and Football Manager), holidays, travelling, and dogs – especially my pooch, Ruby! But that’s all part and parcel of building a rapport with clients and candidates.

Lately, I have quite a lot of meetings with clients – largely via Teams. I find these regular check-ins are really beneficial, and much better than a phone call!

What’s your favourite thing about working at Cathcart?

I like how much autonomy I’m given in my role. You hear so many horror stories about agencies giving you impossible KPIs and breathing down your neck – but this is far from the case at Cathcart. There’s a good level of trust and mutual respect, and I’m encouraged to do things my own way, which I think is great – not to mention very rare in comparison to most other organisations.

The perks are honestly incredible too! I just passed my driving test a few months back (don’t judge – I know I should have done this a while ago), and Cathcart gave me a brand new Golf. Not bad at all! There are so many incentive trips as well; I went to Paris in May, Miami in June, and I’ve got Mallorca coming up in August. My partner is pretty jealous!

What does a typical day at Cathcart look like for you?

Typically, my day centres around working with and speaking to my clients and candidates. With clients, it can be chatting about new job requirements, projects they have on the go, interviews, offers… It’s all very exciting!

I get to partner with some great candidates as well – it’s really enjoyable hearing about people’s different backgrounds and situations. From a technology point of view, the roles they work in and the companies they work for are all very interesting – so it’s great being able to learn more about those things. I also take great pride in having the opportunity to influence and advance people’s careers, and help them secure new opportunities where they get more money or better career progression. It gives you that warm feeling inside!

What’s your favourite thing about working at Cathcart?

My favourite thing about working here is definitely the culture and how incentive-based the role is. Seeing your hard work and effort being recognised and rewarded with nice lunches, trips, and other exciting benefits is truly amazing – it really makes you want to work hard. The people and culture here are also great; it’s a real family vibe – lots of fun!

How has Cathcart changed since you joined?

I’d say I’m the one that’s changed! I’ve certainly grown up a lot since joining Cathcart – not that I was particularly immature before, but more the fact that we essentially run our own mini businesses within the larger business. It means you have a lot more responsibility as well as autonomy, which I love.

I’d also say that I’ve gained a lot more confidence too. At university and during my placement year, I sometimes felt a bit out of my depth and wouldn’t always put my opinions forward. These days, I feel very confident in presenting my ideas – I’d probably be described as one of the loudest in the office! Whether it’s discussing business internally or with clients and candidates, I now have a lot of self-assurance.

What progress have you made at Cathcart?

In terms of my role and title, I’ve been able to climb the ranks and become a senior consultant within two years of starting at Cathcart, which is something I’m really proud of.

When I first joined, I was told that it doesn’t matter how long you’ve been here, if you’re good enough, you can progress. Cathcart has stuck to their word and then some!
